Intermediate Horse Riding Lessons in Pickering
As an intermediate rider at Rocking Horse Stables, you will be trained by an instructor who has competed at the national level in three-day eventing, jumper and dressage.
Private, semi-private and group lessons, as well as part-board arrangements, are available for our more experienced riders.
As an intermediate rider, you will have the choice of having your lessons in our spacious indoor arena or, weather permitting, in our fully-fenced outdoor sand ring. The footing in our outdoor sand ring was professionally designed and installed with proper drainage topped with six inches of “river sand” to provide a firm, non-slip, almost dust-free riding surface.
“Dressage” is a French term that means “training.” It is designed to improve a horse's balance, suppleness and flexibility, as well as improve the communication between horse and rider.
Dressage is often described as the art of dancing on horseback or ballet on horseback and is often compared to the freestyle of figure skating.
In basic dressage, the movements are fairly simple, with the emphasis being on the horse moving forward freely and in good rhythm and being supple laterally and responsive to the rider’s aids.
Because all of our horses and ponies are trained in basic dressage, our intermediate riders have the option of pursuing this discipline if they choose.
Once you have mastered the walk trot and canter and the “two-point” position, you may decide to try jumping. Our instructors have years of experience in teaching intermediate riders how to jump and our focus on safety means that our riders learn to jump in a way that minimizes the risk of injury to both horse and rider. All of our horses and ponies have received a great deal of training in jumping and they jump safely, quietly and calmly.
You will start learning to jump over “crossrails,” which are jumps that are low in the centre and are jumped only from the trot. As you progress, you will start jumping “gymnastics,” which are a line of two or more jumps that are set precise distances apart and are also jumped only from the trot.
Rocking Horse Stables is located on 150 acres within the scenic Oak Ridges Moraine. We have groomed trails around the entire property that are available for use in the late spring, summer and early fall.
In the spring, the apple blossoms along the trails are spectacular, and in the fall, the autumn colours are delightful.
As an intermediate rider, weather permitting, you can choose to ride on the trails rather than having your lesson in the indoor arena or outdoor sand ring. For the safety of you and your horse, you will be accompanied on the trails by your instructor.
