About Our Equestrian Facilities in Pickering, Ontario

Rocking Horse Stables is a 150-acre equestrian facility that boasts both a large indoor arena and a fully-fenced, professionally-designed outdoor sand ring. Also available are miles of scenic, groomed trails for use by our intermediate and advanced students. The stable, arena, sand ring and trails are maintained to the highest standards for the safety of our students and our horses.

Historic Bank Barn

Our barn was erected in the 1880s and is of the style known as a “bank barn,” because it was built into the side of a hill. This design keeps the barn cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

The barn was originally used to house cattle, but the interior has been completely redesigned to include 14 spacious box stalls, wide aisles for grooming and a heated tackroom with both hot and cold running water.

Indoor Arena

All lessons for novice riders are held in our spacious, 100-foot by 200-foot indoor riding arena. The arena is equipped with a state-of-the-art mercury lighting system for shadow-free night-time riding. This enclosed space minimizes distractions and helps both the horse and the rider to focus.

For our intermediate and advanced riders, the large indoor arena provides ample space for practising dressage or jumping gymnastics during unfavourable weather.

Outdoor Sand Ring

Our 112-foot by 165-foot outdoor sand ring was designed from the ground up to provide stable, consistent and non-slip footing, allowing riders a comfortable and safe jumping surface.

Our sand ring is maintained to the highest standards and our wide variety of show-quality jumps allow us to regularly make changes to the course to keep it interesting.

150 Acres of Scenic Trails

Our scenic trails extend to the west and north of the barn and central riding facilities, through rolling hills and around our 70 acres of hay fields. The trails are maintained weekly throughout the spring, summer and fall to ensure a hazard-free riding experience.

Apple Orchard

Our two-acre apple orchard is planted with many varieties of heirloom apples that were custom grafted onto dwarf root-stock. As well as the orchard providing masses of apples for our horses and ponies in the late summer and early fall, we invite our students to enjoy our organically-grown apples while at the farm and to take some home for baking or for the enjoyment of their families and friends.
